DIY bathroom: do you know do-it-yourself techniques?

DIY bathroom: do you know do-it-yourself techniques?

The importance of this environment:

The bathroom is a very important room of the house, where you spend several moments in a day, moments dedicated mainly to the care of their hygiene and their person and to their relaxation. This environment, therefore, must be taken care of in every detail, to ensure that those who use it all the comforts necessary to enjoy that little time for themselves that you can cut out after long, chaotic and stressful working days. That’s why a bathroom must combine aesthetic beauty with so much, so much functionality, since certainly in a beautiful environment to see also take care of and relax is much easier, because it is a much warmer and more welcoming, while instead it must be functional because it must allow you to have enough space in which to store everything that may be necessary for ‘intimate hygiene, for example, and because it must allow you to have everything at hand, so you can use it without too many problems.

Furnishing a bathroom, therefore, is certainly not an easy task. The first thing to do is to choose the style of the bathroom, but ahime, this too often must be limited according to the budget: surely there will be those who can spend even large amounts, and then the problem in this case does not arise, but for those with a budget is limited, as often happens in these periods, you should not be discouraged: through the DIY you can reduce to ‘bone the costs of renovation or creation of the bathroom, and make sure to pay only for materials and some essential operations of labor, which must necessarily make professionals, such as systems to provide water to the bathroom. For everything else, such as the installation of the sanitary fixtures themselves, the laying of the floors and any tiles, the painting of the walls … you can also think of it yourself, through our detailed guide.

The important thing, therefore, when you choose the bathroom, is to continue with taste, and try to combine this environment with the rest of the house, but above all to make the most of every minimum space: not everyone, in fact, can give himself a large bathroom in which to relax, but if you use various devices will still be possible to arrange everything in such a way as to have everything under control, and then to be able to say that you have a bathroom as functional as possible.

Important, then, is the taste that you have to put in the choices: the bathroom must not only meet its functional needs, but also and above all their aesthetic needs: it is important to be in a place that we like to be at ease and to be able to enjoy the best of our hours, or even just our few minutes of well-deserved relaxation.

The first thing to do when you want to build or renovate a bathroom, is to design the ‘environment that you would like to have as a result, so you need to arrange the bathroom, the bath or shower tray, any suspended or attached to the wall, any radiators or air conditioners and everything else’ furniture provided. During this phase, you have to choose with skill and cunning the placement of all the sanitaryware, to make sure to make the most of the space. This of course will also be the part of the work where you have to decide the types of sanitaryware that you want to include in your bathroom, starting with the simplest and cheapest and ending with those more technological and expensive, such as any shower with hydromassage, a thermo furniture etc.

During this operation you have to consider that the position of the toilet should never be far from the drain column of the house, because normally the drain pipes must have at least one cm of slope every meter of length of the pipe. The washing machine, on the other hand, can be moved further away from the drain column (obviously this is the case if you live inside a condominium), since it uses a pump to drain it. The shower tray should not be too far away. It is advisable for the drain pipes to be 50 mm in diameter for longer routes, more or less on a slope. Then you must also consider the distance you want to have between a sanitary and ‘other. We recommend a distance of at least fifty centimetres, if not more.

Necessary permits and bureaucratic issues:

For the renovation of the bathroom do not change the walls, so you do not have to ask for permission if you live in apartment buildings, precisely because these works are part of the routine maintenance. If, on the other hand, the renovation of the bathroom requires the walls to be moved, as happens, for example, when you want to create the ante-bathroom, in this case you need to contact professionals, then surveyors or architects, who will have to take the trouble to present the DIA (declaration of commencement of activities) at the town of residence for the renovation of the bathroom.

If the renovation or creation of the bathroom is entrusted to professionals in the field, then for example to a construction company, it may be necessary to issue certificates. It is important to consider that whatever the staff that restructures our bathroom, it must be in order, unless they are DIY jobs, which are then performed with their own hands and there is no need for any statement. The external staff, therefore, must be in order with all the current elections, and must issue a certificate on the systems built, such as any gas, electrical or boiler systems, in addition to the regret of heating. Even those who will carry out the annual maintenance of the boiler in the future will have to issue the certification of ‘occurred control, issuing a “Green Boil”.

The floor and walls:

Renewing the bathroom floor allows you to give it a new face, even when it is the most impersonal bathroom in the world. In this case, it is necessary to act following the simple instructions that you can find in our articles about the laying of the various types of floors. These operations are quite simple, but vary depending on the type of floor you choose, but in any case can be performed very well even by an inexperienced do-it-yourself who has, however, followed every slightest step.

The advice we give you is to choose for your bathroom, a mosaic coating, which represents a very innovative solution compared to the traditional tiles that are chosen for the bangi, as it allows you to transform the appearance of the bathroom in an incredible way, without the need to intervene with masonry works. With this type of floor it is also possible to create decorations on the floor, creating very suggestive mosaics, especially for large bathrooms.

To maintain an ‘excellent cleanliness of the bathroom, also, are recommended tiles, completely washable, even with regard to the walls.

As for the walls of the bathroom, we already mentioned in the previous paragraph the use of tiles, which would also cover the walls of the bathroom because, being completely washable, would keep the bathroom in perfect cleanliness, and also avoid problems caused by the creation of mold and bacteria brought by steam and water.

In addition, to create a more suggestive environment, it is also possible to use glass-cement walls, useful for separating the area destined to the washbasin from the area destined to the sanitary fixtures and the bathtub, or it is possible to create an original shower with fixed walls, made with glass-cement bricks. On how to do this, we recommend consulting our articles on glass cement and its use.

Do-it-yourself bathroom: Fix the sanitary fixtures:

If you want to entrust the installation of the sanitary wares to a professional plumber, the average cost for each individual sanitary ware would be around thirty-five euros, but this is not a very demanding operation, so you can easily do it through the practice of do-it-yourself.

For the support sanitary fixtures you can simply use two specific plugs that will be used to fix them to the wall or floor, and white cement to be spread between them and the wall. The supporting sanitary fixtures are therefore very simple to install, they are sturdy and allow you to hide the pipes of the water system.

For suspended sanitary fixtures, the operation is more complex, and it is first necessary to evaluate the material of the wall to which they are to be fixed, then it is necessary to fix these sanitary fixtures to the wall using special plugs with a specific kit for fixing, designed to hold up to about 300 kg.

Remember that if you are going to renovate the bathroom, then remove the old sanitary ware to install the new ones, you must evaluate the technical characteristics of the old ones, because the choice must be made taking these into account. In practice it is enough to take into consideration the brand and the model, and these will allow you to go back to the technical data sheet of the product and the size of the connections, so you can buy compatible sanitaryware.

Before installing the new sanitary fixtures, however, it is necessary to remove the old ones, and for this operation the first thing to do is to close the key to stop the water, located near the meter and drain the flush.

For the toilet, unscrew the ring nut and remove the pipe that connects it to the flush, with a ring wrench then unscrew the two bolts hexagonal head and with a decisive blow you have to take it from the floor.

For the bidet, remove the drain pipe and the hot and cold water pipes, unscrew the two fixing bolts and remove it from the floor, as done with the toilet.

For the washbasin, you have to remove the support column, unscrew it with the brackets on which it is placed and remove the rubo drain and the pipes of ‘hot water and’ cold water. At this point, remove the layer of silicone and bainkoo cement with a spatula.
