All about circular saws: comparison and purchasing guide

On this page I would like to tell you everything I have learned about circular saws. Obviously I have taken several factors into consideration to establish the best products: design and manufacturing materials, ergonomics, strengths, technical features and price-quality ratio. Also you need to look at track saw reviews.

How to choose a good quality circular saw?

The characteristics of the blade

This factor is extremely important and must absolutely be taken into account by all those who want to buy a circular saw. You should know that – as we will see in more detail in a moment – there are many types of blades and each of them must be used for a different type of material. First of all, you should know that circular saw blades can be made of different metals, but I recommend that you prefer a blade made of High Speed Steel (HSS) because they can be sharpened directly at home and are relatively versatile. However, I must confess that they are not particularly resistant and do not have an extremely long life expectancy.

Of course there are many other blades and – as I have already told you – each of them corresponds to a precise use. If you agree, then I would say that we can take a brief look at the most common types of blades on the market and the corresponding use!

Precision blade

The latter is perfect for finishing touches such as moldings. If you are not really familiar with circular saws, then I would advise you to leave it alone!
Nut saw blades. This type is also not very easy to use and is used to create grooves and joints. These jobs are rather delicate and – as a result – should be done by someone who has a steady hand and some experience in the field.

Tempered alloy blade

This type is used to cut metal sheets and tubes and – consequently – should be used on resistant materials. I recommend it!

Diamond blades

These blades – as the name suggests – are extremely resistant and should be used to cut materials such as concrete and brick.

Abrasive blades

The latter type should be used to cut synthetic materials and soft metals.
TCT blades. This type is coated with tungsten carbides and is perfect for cutting the most resistant woods.

Another factor to take into consideration is the number of teeth of a blade. In fact you should know that the cut will be more precise and clean if the blade has a large number of teeth.

The power of the circular saw

Power is a factor that absolutely must be taken into account before buying a circular saw as it has many consequences. First of all, you should know that the greater the power, the greater the diameter of the blade that your circular saw will be able to withstand. In addition, a high power output will allow your circular saw to make more revolutions per minute and will guarantee even higher performance and will not oblige you to take boring interruptions so that your model does not overheat.

Finally, I would like to remind you that a higher power will guarantee the user an economic saving as it allows us not to waste electricity unnecessarily. In short, this factor is absolutely to be taken into consideration before the purchase because it is really determined to qualify each circular saw. You should know that most of these products – obviously excluding professional circular saws – have an average output of between 500 and 1500 Watts, but you can also find circular saws up to 2000 Watts! I personally recommend that you always prefer a product with a higher power output, especially at the same price! Of course it depends on your needs, but remember that a circular saw will always tend to overheat!

Cutting specifications

From this point we have to take into consideration different factors: the thickness of the blade, the possible inclination of the cut and the diameter of the blade itself. Are you ready? Then let’s get started!

The thickness of the blade

This factor influences the accuracy of the cut as it determines its width. If you need to perform particularly precise work, then I recommend using a thin blade. Also remember that a blade that is too thick eliminates a large amount of material and could damage the final result of your work.

The inclination of the cut

First of all, you should know that having the ability to make slanted cuts is particularly useful and is an option that you should not underestimate. All circular saws currently available on the market will tend to allow you to achieve an inclination of at least 45°. The most expensive and semi-professional / professional products can also reach an inclination of sixty degrees.

All in all, I recommend you to choose a model that offers at least a 45° inclination, but I do not think it is appropriate to go up to sixty.

The diameter of the blade

Obviously this element is extremely important as it determines the depth of the cut. Personally, I believe that the maximum depth of a good circular saw must at least reach five centimetres perpendicular and – consequently – you must absolutely have a diameter of at least 160 millimetres.

But is a mini circular saw really useful?

First of all you should know that – I humbly beg your forgiveness for the double sense – size is important, even in the world of circular saws. The dimensions of a circular saw tend to have to be adapted to the size of the cuts and incisions you want to make. So, as I suppose you have understood, it is absolutely logical to assume that if you are going to undertake rather important work on large materials, then you have one certainty: you need a circular saw that is quite important from the point of view of weight and size.
Secondly, you also need to think about the type of material you want to cut with your circular saw. Of course, if you want to work on a carbide you need more power than you need to cut – for example – plywood. The power of a circular saw tends to be directly proportional to its size.

Having said this, I can tell you that – at least in my humble opinion – mini circular saws can be extremely useful and contribute to a correct maintenance of the house. Obviously they are perfect models only to carry out minor maintenance work in the house, but they also have some advantages! They are easy to transport, easy to handle and easy to store!

I personally recommend you to buy a mini circular saw, to be used as a useful supplement to a more important model in terms of size and power!

In depth: the immersion circular saws

This type of circular saw differs from more classic models due to two fundamental factors: freedom of movement and the presence of a retractable blade. The latter only comes out at the moment of cutting thanks to the pressure exerted by the special control handle.

You should also be aware that these products are extremely versatile and allow us to work with a wide range of materials such as wood, metal, plywood and ceramics. Furthermore – especially to the delight of true DIY enthusiasts – they can be used for the manufacture of home-made furniture.

Are you wondering how to choose this particular type of circular saw? Well… Just like you have to do with more traditional models! Take into account the power, the quality of the materials used, the characteristics of the blade.

Bottom line

I’d say I’ve told you all I know about the world of circular saws and I think you have a lot of food for thought. Remember that my personal TOP5 is completely impartial so you can trust my opinions and judgments. Frankly I hope you enjoyed reading this page and – in this case – also read all my articles and keep following me for updates!
